Z100

Image result for z100WHTZ branded Z-100 is an American radio station based in New Jersey serving the New York city metropolitan area. It is owned by iHeartRADIO. The station really reminds me of the American version of a station in the UK such as Capital. It focuses on chart and pop music. Besides an analogue transmission, it broadcasts over two HD radio channels and is available to listen to online on the iHeartRADIO website. It has been on air since 1961 and has always been a station that has provided music for the younger generation. Its target audience is aimed at 15-30 year olds and this is evident in the speech of the show, bubbly personalities and heavy entertainment talk throughout the day.Digitalisation is important to the brand as their website is really well-organised and has a lot of information on there too. On their website it has sections such as contests, playlists, presenter profiles and so many articles on the home page to look at. It looks really informative visually. The presenting is a mix of crunch and roll links and informative entertainment and music segments with news on the hour too. You can tell it isn't a specialist channel though as music is never talked about in depth compared to more specialist stations I have listened to such as Radio X. This could be one improvement that could be made to the station as I always think music knowledge is important. (Benoit & O' Donnell 2000) state that "A broad knowledge of music is critical to the radio professional." So I think talking about music knowledge more would be helpful to the station. A big feature the station organsies is the "Z100 Jingle Ball" held annually in Maddison Square Garden during the winter holiday season with artists in the past including Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, Lady Gaga and David Guetta to name a few. The station promotes this heavily to get listeners to buy tickets and tune in to try and win tickets so having a huge event on like this if you're a big enough station like this one is a really great feature to have. The station also features acoustic live sets from bands performing either their songs or covers and these are uploaded to YouTube giving them a large online presence too for fans to access them visually as well as aurally live on air so this is a really good use of social media and online video. Overall I think the station provides a good genre of music and entertainment talk for its target demographic but overall could talk about the music more in links to create a larger music understanding for the listeners.
